Fingerprint pattern classifications are used to subdivide large databases in traditional law enforcement AFIS applications.

Minutia matching is used to compare a Reference Print to selected Candidate Prints of a particular pattern type. A statistical correlation is computed between the Reference Print and each Candidate Print. A "Match" is declared when the statistical correlation score for one of the Candidate Prints exceeds a pre-set threshold.
